The celebrations were inaugurated by Shri Vajubhai Vala, Finance Minister of Gujarat State. Both he and Chief Guest of the inaugural function, Shri Ramanlal Vora, State Education Minister paid rich tribute to our Founder, Shri Nanjibhai Kalidas Mehta and his pioneering achievements both in India and Africa and in particular to the cause of women’s education.
An important highlight of the inaugural function was the launch of the book ‘Manipuri Dance and Music’ by noted Rajya Sabha MP and celebrated actor, director producer and danseuse, Hema Malini. Written by the famous Manipuri dance exponent and daughter of our Founder, the late Dr. Savitadidi Mehta, the book is unique in that it has achieved the insurmountable (and never before attempted) task of codifying all the oral tradition and knowledge of Manipuri dance into an encyclopedia to carry forward this rich legacy for posterity. Smt. Nirmalaben Khatau, younger daughter of our Founder and editor of the book, gave an introduction to the book to the gathering.
To mark the Platinum Jubilee of Arya Kanya Gurukul and showcasing the minute attention to detail and precision planning that marked the events, 75 students of Arya Kanya Gurukul, Santokba Vidya Mandir and Gurukul Mahila College sang the school anthem against an audio-visual of the educational journey of Gurukul playing on the backdrop.
The pinnacle of the celebrations – a dance ballet entitled ‘Yugdharma : Ganga Amrut Sarita’ Beautifully choreographed and exquisitely executed, the theme of the River Ganga being brought to earth for the salvation of humanity and how owing to its current state of pollution, it would now have to be salvaged by humanity, was enacted before a rapt and enthralled audience.
An audio-visual promoting the concept of making our rivers pollution-free was next screened with messages from well known celebrities like Bhagawat Kathakar, Puyja Bhaishri Rameshbhai Oza, legendary playback singer Lata Mangeshkar, classical vocalist Pandit Jasrajji, flautist Shri Hariprasad Chaurasia, producer director and filmstar Aamir Khan and actress Juhi Chawla.
